Few things in life are more comforting than a steaming bowl of soup. Our mom’s legendary soups were the ones that waited for us after a frosty walk home from school; warmed us to our core after neighborhood snow angel contests; soothed our souls after the big breakups and graced our family table for holiday celebrations.

Wowza – is it cold here on the east coast! I don’t ever remember it being this cold. It has been interesting to see how my 1830s house on the river deals with the temperatures. Lets just say – our toes are rather frosty! With half the house under renovation, the other half is trying hard to keep up. But thankfully our forefathers were thoughtful enough to put lots of fireplaces in here so we can keep the one downstairs cranking out toasty warmth – enough to shed a layer or two of clothing.

The simplest of meals can feed the soul. With the Thanksgiving holiday (and all its excesses) behind us, it is the simple soups of fall that I crave. A simple meaty mushroom soup or perhaps s simple pot of leftover stock with greens and eggs stirred throughout – nothing fussy yet satisfying to my very soul. These recipes will require a bit of preparation in the kitchen but nothing excessive – a bit of time washing and chopping and rolling; a bit of quiet kitchen time after the storm of the recent holiday and in advance of the onslaught of future holiday activities.
